Portobello Mushroom Burgers

Ingredients

  • 3-4 portobello mushrooms 1 per person
  • ½ Tbs. maple syrup
  • 1 Tbs. balsamic vinegar
  • 1 Tbs. soy sauce
  • 1 clove garlic crushed
  • ¼ tsp. basil
  • ¼ tsp. oregano
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • 3-4 whole-wheat sandwich buns optional for serving
  • 3-4 tomato slices optional for serving
  • 3-4 lettuce leaves optional for serving
  • 3-4 onion slices optional for serving
  • burger condiments - ketchup mustard, mayonnaise, BBQ sauce, optional for serving

Instructions

  • Remove the stems from the mushrooms and use a spoon to scrape out the gills.
  • Stir the remaining ingredients together and pour into a rimmed baking sheet or pan.
  • Place the mushrooms top side down in the marinade and allow to marinate for 30 minutes or longer.
  • Remove from marinade and place on a baking pan, top side up.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes at 400°. 
  • Serve alone or in a bun as a sandwich.
