Portobello Mushroom Burgers

- 3-4 portobello mushrooms 1 per person
- ½ Tbs. maple syrup
- 1 Tbs. balsamic vinegar
- 1 Tbs. soy sauce
- 1 clove garlic crushed
- ¼ tsp. basil
- ¼ tsp. oregano
- salt & pepper to taste
- 3-4 whole-wheat sandwich buns optional for serving
- 3-4 tomato slices optional for serving
- 3-4 lettuce leaves optional for serving
- 3-4 onion slices optional for serving
- burger condiments - ketchup mustard, mayonnaise, BBQ sauce, optional for serving
Remove the stems from the mushrooms and use a spoon to scrape out the gills.
Stir the remaining ingredients together and pour into a rimmed baking sheet or pan.
Place the mushrooms top side down in the marinade and allow to marinate for 30 minutes or longer.
Remove from marinade and place on a baking pan, top side up.
Bake for 15-20 minutes at 400°.
Serve alone or in a bun as a sandwich.
